Certified
athletic trainers are health care professionals, who specialize in
preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that
result from physical activity. As part of a complete healthcare team,
the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed
physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals,
athletic administrators, coaches and parents.
Certified
athletic trainers are highly educated. They acquire a bachelor’s or a
master’s degree from an accredited college or university in athletic
training, sports medicine, pre-medical sciences, kinesiology, exercise
physiology, biology, exercise science or physical education. In
addition, they study human anatomy, human physiology, bio-mechanics,
pharmacology, exercise physiology, kinesiology, nutrition and
psychology/ counseling. Through the use of proper evaluation and
rehabilitation, athletic trainers help prevent re-injury and assist in
returning an athlete to competition quickly and safely.
Recognizing
the need and importance of having well trained health care professionals
available to local high school athletic teams, Precision Orthopaedic
Specialties, Inc. (“Precision”) and Geauga Sports Medicine began
providing athletic training services to Geauga county schools.
Spearheaded by Dr. Michael Kellis, certified athletic trainers were in
place at Notre Dame Cathedral Latin High School, Berkshire High School
and Newbury High School, beginning in 1991. Over the past 15 years,
Precision has provided athletic training services for Chardon High
School, Cardinal High School, West Geauga High School, Brooklyn High
School (Parma), Ledgemont High School and Grand Valley High School.
Working closely with Precision physicians, our athletic trainers form an
important link in the proper management of athletic injuries, ensuring
